1968 was a big year for me. My family packed up our VW bus and drove from Connecticut to Eugene, Ore., so my dad could go to the university. That year was really tight: My parents often reminded my sister, two brothers and me that we did not have much money because my dad was on sabbatical. That year our Christmas tree was tiny, and my second-grade brain registered that the pile of gifts was very small.
